About Us

The concept and general outline for La Atlantida Internet Services were begun in 1993 by Professor Sigmund J. Kardas, Jr., science researcher and teacher who had been actively working with computers since 1968, both in Europe and the United States. You can find an illustrated overview of his computer and Web related activities at Comments.

His vision was to establish an informative Internet presence, sometimes termed an Internet Portal, reflecting his interests and ideas, which might be useful to others having similar interests around the world. After much thought and planning, in 1996 he activated his first web site, Kardas.net, which would serve as the focal point for his future Internet activities. The World Wide Web was in existence for many years [the ARPANET], being used by scientists, the military and large corporations as a simplistic text means of communication among individuals -- the following screen shot illustrates how these messages appeared on the workstation monitor, and, in this case, documents the first use [by Scott E. Fahlman in 1982] of what has become the universal symbol of a joke, the smiley, on present day message boards --

the WWW was still in its infancy in terms of its use by the general public. It was very expensive to register a domain name for personal use, and the tools for creating web pages were few and far between -- one had to have a working knowledge of computer language [html = hypertext markup language] and do all the work by typing in hundreds of lines of code for each web page, a very time consuming process, making mistakes in the often complicated procedure -- this screen shot shows the html for part of what appears above --

made using PageMill v.3.0

the web page creator could also use some computer application program which facilitates the process, the first of which was Adobe PageMill

PageMill is an older app from about 1996, available for PCs and Macs. It still may be found in the original boxed set with manual and CD on eBay and other online venues

instead of having to type in html code, PageMill does that work automatically. All you have to do it type in text and drag and drop images into the page in the appropriate place.

the software CD for PageMill v.3.0 was bundled with the earlier Kodak and some other digital cameras -- the original boxed set may also be found for sale online

Although many newer apps have appeared since PageMill, they are very convoluted, offering too many options which few understand, and take more time to produce the desired results

Three Steps to Establish Your Personal Internet Portal

You can opt to use the usually FREE web page options offered by your Internet provider [such as AOL, Verizon, etc.]. You can also sign up with MySpace or other blog providers. These options bring with them the always increasing commercial ads which distract from the message and information that you want to present. They are often complicated to do and your options may be limited to the templates which the service gives you.

Professor Kardas has three easy steps to take for starting your own personalized global address on the WWW, be it strictly personal / family / commercial use, or a combination of these two main concepts.

The first is how to find a Top Level domain name which reflects the material you want to present to your viewers. You can find that information here

Next you need a provider which offers you space on the WWW for your information.

The last step is perhaps the most complicated, that of actually making your web pages.

God Bless !
